Rogue traders

If you think you have been a victim of a rogue trader or doorstep conman please report this to Citizens Advice. The most common type of rogue trader is somebody who knocks at your door and tells you that you need work done on your home or garden. These traders in many cases have identified vulnerable people who may be easier to persuade to allow these jobs to be done.

In the majority of cases, the standard of workmanship is very poor and on many occasions the work is not finished.

These doorstep conmen will pressurise you to agree to having these jobs done and will ask for a deposit in advance. In many cases they have not returned to start the work that was agreed. Don't be forced into making a decision on the spot.

Please see the rogue traders video by Essex County Council.

If you do require work to be done, Trading Standards Officers recommend that you:

  • get personal recommendations for traders from friends, family or neighbours
  • ask for references from recent clients
  • describe exactly what you want prior to requesting a quote
  • request a quotation form more than one trader
  • take your time. Don't be hurried into making a decision

Additionally, you could take a look at the Buy with Confidence Scheme website to help choose a reliable trader.
