Memorials on graves
No new vault will be permitted to be constructed in the Cemetery.
No headstones are permitted on Public Graves. Sometimes a small memorial vase is allowed on a public grave. This would need to be checked by the cemetery manager and must be fitted by a proper memorial mason. The memorial mason will need to apply to the cemetery office for this.
A new memorial or adding words to an existing memorial can be applied for with a memorial mason. They might need to move or take away the memorial to do this. The memorial mason will need to apply for permission using an application form. There is a fee for the permission which the memorial mason will pay. The cemetery office will give the memorial mason a permit for the work. This will all be checked by the cemetery office.
A memorial mason should apply at least 2 weeks in advance of their preferred date to start work. The application form must have:
- the grave number and name of deceased
- a new memorial will need a diagram of on the application. We need the correct sizes, material type, colour, and finish (i.e. polished, honed, natural) of the material to be used. We will also need the size and material of the foundation. The memorial may need to be ground anchored.
- the wording to be made on the stone, and any changes to the wording on the stone already
- the name, address, and signature of the grave owner. This is to authorise the memorial mason to do the work
- the name, address, and telephone number of the memorial mason
The cemetery office will allow the work once the application form has been checked. A permit for the memorial mason to do the work will be given to the memorial mason. The permit will give the memorial mason 3 months to finish the work and install the memorial. The memorial mason should not do any work to the stone unless a permit has been given. The work that the memorial mason does should match the application form and be in line with the rules. If the memorial does not match the application form, or does not meet the rules the memorial mason should take the memorial away and make it the right way.
Memorial figures should be made of natural stone or reconstituted natural stone. The stone is not allowed to be covered in plastic, gilding (gold or metal leaf paint), glazed or painted. Memorial figures can only be fixed on to the base, a niche, or to a ledge of a headstone and should not be bigger than 15" high. It should not be bigger the base.
The size (Imperial or Metric) of the monument or memorial should be :
In all of the sizes below the bottom of the headstone where it meets the base, should be as thick as the headstone.
