How to request CCTV footage

Requesting video images because of an accident

The request must come from your:

  • insurance company, or
  • solicitor

This is to provide assurance that the images are being used for lawful purposes.

We have a legal duty to make sure images are not shared unlawfully.

Requests should be made to:

Private and confidential for the attention of: Data Protection Officer
Southend City Council
PO Box 6 Civic Centre
Victoria Avenue
Southend-on-Sea
SS2 6ER

or by email: dataprotection@southend.gov.uk

Information we need from you to answer your request:

  • solicitor's / insurer's name and address, sent from a company email account
  • the name of the client
  • time, date and place of the incident
  • vehicle details (vehicle registration, make, model, colour) of all vehicles involved
  • description of incident

Our response

We will:

  • tell applicants if there are cameras in the area that may have caught the incident

We will not:

  • search to see if any incident has been captured
  • share images or footage with the applicant

Images will only be released to the insurance company or solicitor.

This is a free service.

If you have made a subject access request application, please be aware it is unlikely to succeed. This application can be made under the General Data Protection Regulation.

You should also be aware that CCTV images are only kept for 30 days from the date of the recording. This is so that we keep in line with our retention schedule.
