Southend School Governors

Key functions of a governing body

The Core Strategic Functions of a governing or academy body typically are:

  • ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

The schedule of delegation for a Trust will lay out the strategic functions. This may vary from school to school.

Governors:

  • work with the Headteachers and leaders to improve the pupil outcomes
  • may engage with pupils and families, for example to gather views
  • are not operational
  • do not make day to day decisions about how the school is run, as this is the responsibility of staff
