Key functions of a governing body
The Core Strategic Functions of a governing or academy body typically are:
- ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
- overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
The schedule of delegation for a Trust will lay out the strategic functions. This may vary from school to school.
Governors:
- work with the Headteachers and leaders to improve the pupil outcomes
- may engage with pupils and families, for example to gather views
- are not operational
- do not make day to day decisions about how the school is run, as this is the responsibility of staff
