Domestic abuse
Survivors of domestic abuse who have or have had a lifetime tenancy but fled the social home to escape domestic abuse, will retain their lifetime security of tenure if the landlord grants them a new tenancy for reasons connected with the abuse.
This is in line with the Domestic Abuse Act 2021.
We expect social housing providers to adopt this approach for survivors of domestic abuse even if:
- a social landlord normally grants flexible tenancies
- the household has fled to temporary accommodation or a refuge
Domestic abuse survivors in these circumstances do not have to be offered an introductory or starter tenancy first.
