Tenancy types granted by the council
Introductory tenancies
These will usually last for one year and are offered to most new tenants.
Secure (lifetime) tenancies
These allow a tenant to live in a home for the rest of their life. Providing they do not break the tenancy conditions.
Non-secure tenancies or licence agreements
These are used for granting a temporary tenancy of a council property to people experiencing homelessness, who meet certain eligibility requirements.
Assured shorthold tenancies
This is the most common type of tenancy in the private rented sector. In some cases, they may be used by the council's arms-length management organisation (South Essex Homes).
