Street Champions - we need you
Welcome to our street champions network an initiative that encourages local residents in Southend-on-Sea to care for their neighbourhood by volunteering time to collect litter from their local street, green space, beach or other communal land.
Street Champions improve an area by looking after the environment and encouraging neighbours and friends to be more concerned about litter.
So helping to make Southend a better place for us all has never been easier!
What does being a Street Champion involve?
There is no formal commitment required to become a Street Champion volunteer you can give as much or as little time as you like, either in a group or on your own. It could be 15 minutes when walking the dog or on your way to work, a Saturday morning once a month with some friends or any time you get the urge to make a difference in your community.
What are the benefits of becoming a Street Champion?
- satisfaction at seeing your area clear of litter
- taking part in positive actions to improve your local environment
- being linked to a community of like-minded and environmentally-conscious people
- helping to encourage responsible behaviour around litter
- helping to prevent plastics entering the wider environment and potentially polluting our seas
What will I get?
You will be provided with a welcome kit that includes a litter picker, gloves, sacks, bag hoop, high-viz jacket, a window sticker plus any additional equipment you might need to carry out your role. We will give you training and support.

During 2025 SUEZ will be working with stakeholders to share information on the new enhanced recycling and waste collection scheme. This will start in Southend-on-Sea from 27 October 2025.
Stakeholders include:
- the Council
- residents
- different community groups
We will look at attending different events to make sure that residents have the knowledge they need to help them to be ready for the new scheme. This will lead to:
- greater levels of recycling
- improved quality
They also manage the Street Champions and Recycling Champions scheme. If you are interested in these schemes, then please contact SUEZ by visiting their website.
