Am I registered to vote?

However you choose to vote, you must be registered. The quickest and easiest way to register to vote is online.

If you're not sure if you are already registered to vote, use our online form to check.

If you are not registered, you can register:

  • online
  • call us on 01702 215010

When we receive your application, we must check your identity against Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), other Council records, or sometimes we may contact you and ask you to provide documentary evidence to support your application. This means that that you are not automatically registered when you submit your application.

We will send you written confirmation through the post once your application has been accepted.

Please note that you will need your National Insurance Number when you register.

You can register to vote at any time up to 12 working days before an election.

A short video explanation in British Sign Language (BSL) can be found on YouTube.

Requirement to provide documentary evidence

In some cases, we are unable to process your application to register because we have not been able to confirm your identity, which we are required to do by law before we can determine your application.

To progress your application, we require you to provide documentary evidence so that we can verify your identity. Until this evidence is received, we are unable to process you onto the electoral register.

If I pay Council Tax, am I automatically registered to vote?

Registering for Council Tax does not automatically put you on the electoral register. You need to make a separate application to do this.
