Asbestos

Asbestos

Asbestos must only be disposed of using a licensed contractor.

  • asbestos is not classed as household waste
  • Household Waste Recycling Centres are licensed to accept household waste only
  • asbestos is hazardous with health implications
  • we do not provide a collection or disposal service for asbestos

What should I do if I find asbestos in my home or business?

If it is in good condition then the best option may be to leave it.

Take extra care when undertaking DIY or other improvements. Do not attempt work on:

  • sprayed asbestos
  • lagging
  • insulating boards

as this must be undertaken by a licensed asbestos removal contractor.

Do not:

  • drill
  • cut
  • scrape
  • sand

asbestos materials before painting and decorating, or to remove lichen or moss.

Some types of asbestos materials are very soft. They can release large numbers of fibres if rubbed or scraped. Always wear a protective face mask if you are doing DIY work.

Do not:

  • dust
  • sweep
  • vacuum

anything you think may contain asbestos.

Soak wallpaper before removing it. Use a steam stripper if possible and gently peel away the paper

Do not try to remove old floor tiles or lino. Leave them in place and lay new floor coverings over them.

If in doubt seek advice.

Asbestos cement (cement-bonded asbestos)

The following advice has been provided by the Environment Agency. It should be followed when carrying out any work involving asbestos cement:

  • if the item is in good condition, the best option may be to leave it
  • surfaces may be sealed by painting with an oil-based paint or dilute UPV glue
  • do not do anything that may break up the surface, e.g. do not scrape or brush off lichen or moss
  • do not break up the panels. Wet the surfaces thoroughly and dismantle with care

How should I dispose of asbestos?

It is against the law to dispose of any asbestos waste via the:

  • weekly household waste collections
  • Household Waste Recycling Centres (the Tip)

You must contact a specialist contractor for the collection and disposal of any asbestos.
