Asbestos
Asbestos is not household waste and must only be disposed of using a licensed contractor. Do not dispose of it via the kerbside household waste collection service or the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
Please see our asbestos page for further information.
Household hazardous waste
Household hazardous waste (HHW) must not be put in your normal waste collection.
HHW can take many forms and there may already be a process for collection and recycling, or for safe disposal. Please note there is usually a charge for the collection of HHW.
Examples of HHW include:
Old style televisions and computer monitors
These have cathode ray tubes containing hazardous chemicals. These can be taken to the HWRCs for safe recycling.
Fridges and freezers
Many contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) maybe with hydrogen (HCFC's) propellant, which have a significant impact on the environment. These can be taken to the HWRCs for safe recycling.
Batteries
Some contain harmful heavy metals like lead, cadmium and mercury. Both car (lead acid) batteries and household batteries can be taken to the HWRCs for safe recycling. Batteries can also be recycled at local libraries and at retailers displaying the 'Be Positive' sign.
Garden chemicals and pesticides
It is best to only buy what you need and to use what you buy. We can arrange disposal but a collection fee applies. Alternatively these can be taken to the HWRCs- but please ensure they are in sealed containers and clearly labelled. Please note that the use of creosote by amateurs was banned in 2003.
Car Engine oil (mineral oils)
These have the potential to pollute the environment. Car engine (mineral) oil can be recycled at the HWRCs.
Cooking oils - (e.g. olive, vegetable and sunflower oils)
These can be taken in a sealed container to the HWRCs for recycling. Alternatively cooking oils can be poured into the soil where they will naturally biodegrade (cooking oils only, not engine oil).
Solvents/paints
Where possible please use these up. Some materials will naturally evaporate once opened. Allow materials to dry or harden for safe disposal. If this is not possible then these can be taken to the HWRCs.
Please do not put hazardous waste in your normal waste collection. The HWRCs are for household waste only, it is illegal to dispose of your commercial or business waste (this includes any of the items above which may have been generated during the course of your business activities) at these sites.
