One Black Bag a Week challenge

What's the challenge?

It's easy: put no more than one bag of non-recyclable rubbish out for collection each week.

Why take part?

We're all trying to do our bit to reduce our impact on the climate.

  • reducing your rubbish is one of the simplest actions you can take today to help fight climate change and help Southend reach its target to be carbon neutral by 2030
  • if everyone in Southend simply used all the recycling services they currently have access to, our recycling rate could be as high as 58% compared to our current 43%
  • on average, almost 60% of the content of the black sacks collected in Southend is recyclable or reusable
  • it costs six times more to process rubbish than it does recycling. This is money that could be better spent on other vital services such as schools and parks
  • recycling helps save energy and protects natural resources

Veolia and Southend-on-Sea City Council provide everything you need to be a top recycler for free. In addition to the 6-monthly delivery of sacks and liners, residents can also use MySouthend  to order any:

  • missing containers
  • additional sacks and liners

They will be delivered straight to your doorstep, for free in a few working days.

How to take part

One bag a week only refers to non-recyclable rubbish.

You can continue to put out as many pink recycling sacks as you need. Don't forget to empty and rinse items containing food residue before recycling them.

Whatever might be left after following these easy steps can go in your one bag of rubbish.

Ready to start reducing, reusing and recycling more? Pledge to enter the challenge today.

Three lucky households will even receive vouchers to spend at the Refill Shop located in Leigh-on-Sea. The vouchers can be used both in person and online.
