Southend-on-Sea City Council is urging all pensioners to check if they are eligible for Pension Credit, as many are still missing out on this vital support.
Using the low-income family tracker (LIFT) software, the council has identified close to 800 pensioners in Southend who are entitled to Pension Credit but are not currently claiming it.
Of those 800 eligible pensioners that have been contacted, many are now successfully claiming Pension Credit and unlocking access to additional benefits such as Winter Fuel Payments. However, many remain eligible but have yet to apply.
Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of the Council, said: "We know how tough things are for some of our pensioners, and we want to ensure no one misses out on the support they're entitled to, which is why we are reaching out and promoting the many benefits and support available. We've identified over 800 eligible pensioners so far and will keep working to get that number up until we've identified everyone who is entitled to the support they aren't claiming.
"Pension Credit doesn't just provide additional income; it also opens the door to other vital benefits like Winter Fuel Payments. I encourage every pensioner to check their eligibility or get in touch with us or Citizens Advice for help. The process is straightforward, and it can make a big difference."
To help with rising living costs, the council has also ringfenced £250,000 from the Household Support Fund (HSF) specifically for pensioners. Eligible residents can apply for up to two grants of £360 each this winter to cover essentials like food and energy bills.
Cllr Maxine Sadza, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Healthier Communities, added: "We're here to support our pensioners and the funding we ring-fenced ensures immediate relief for those struggling with everyday costs, and our partnerships with local organisations mean we can reach even more people. If you're worried about food, energy bills, or other expenses, please apply for help, we're here to support you."
The HSF is part of a wider package of support for pensioners in Southend, including:
- Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Payments
- Housing Benefit or Support for Mortgage Interest
- Discounts on council tax and TV licenses for over-75s
- Help with NHS costs, transport for medical appointments, and energy-saving appliances through the Essential Living Fund
The council is working closely with Citizens Advice Southend and the Southend Emergency Fund to ensure these funds reach those who need them most, including pensioners, disabled individuals, and carers.
