This year, under the theme 'For a Better Future', we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. Southend-on-Sea will gather to honour the memory of all victims and survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides.

The council invites the public to reflect on these tragic events, aiming to educate and inspire a future free from genocide and hatred. Together, in remembrance and hope, we can strive for a world where such atrocities never happen again.

The commemoration service will take place on Sunday 26 January at 15:00 at Southend Civic Centre, Victoria Avenue, Southend, SS2 6ER. The service will also be available to watch online from Wednesday 29 January. The service will include music, poetry, readings, exhibitions and an address by holocaust survivor, Paul Sved, BEM

On Monday 27 January at 12:00 noon, The Worshipful the Mayor, Cllr Ron Woodley along with the Jewish community, will plant a tree in Southchurch Park, Shaftesbury Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 2YN, in memory of those who perished in the Nazi death camps and other genocides across the world.

Exhibitions of works which is dedicated to the unique stories of the Jews who found themselves facing unprecedented situations, which tested their human principles of solidarity, is currently being displayed at the Forum until Friday 23 January.

Cllr Daniel Cowan, leader of the council, said: "It is essential that we remember the past to safeguard our future. Holocaust Memorial Day is an important day, recognised nationally, to honour all the victims and those who have suffered because of genocide.

"This year, I hope we can all come together as a community and reflect on these dark chapters of history, so we can learn and grow, ensuring that such horrors are never repeated.

"I hope to see many of you at the services and exhibition. Your presence is invaluable as we remember, reflect, and strive for a better future. We are also honoured to welcome our special guests, who will join us in this important commemoration."

Attendance at all services listed above is free of charge, with no booking required.
