Council launches its own “Rocket O'Clock” campaign for safe and considerate firework celebrations

With Bonfire Night and Diwali celebrations lighting up the season, the Council is launching its own “Rocket O'Clock” campaign.

This is an initiative that has already proven successful in other areas around the country.

The campaign was part of a motion debated and approved at Full Council in 2023 and encourages residents to be mindful of their fireworks use, especially in residential areas, to ensure celebrations remain enjoyable and safe for all.

The "Rocket O'Clock" campaign asks residents to consider only setting off fireworks during early evening hours, ideally between 7pm and 9pm, to reduce the impact on families, pets, and those sensitive to loud sounds. Those planning their own displays should also follow the fireworks code. This approach supports safer, more predictable celebrations across the city.

Cllr Lydia Hyde, cabinet member for climate, environment, and waste, said: "Fireworks can be a wonderful part of our celebrations, but we must consider their impact on our community, particularly those with sensory sensitivities, and pets and wildlife.

"We are asking people to limit firework use to certain hours and attend public displays where possible. This can help everyone enjoy the festivities with a little more peace of mind. Let's make this Bonfire Night and Diwali season safe and enjoyable for all in Southend."

Residents can help support the "Rocket O'Clock" initiative by choosing quieter firework options where possible, attending a planned public display instead, and informing neighbours ahead of time about their own displays.

Those having their own displays are also urged to follow bonfire and safety advice and the fireworks code. This includes only buying fireworks marked CE, and supervising children at all times.
