First-year graphic design students from USP College Seevic Campus took part in a competition to design a float for Southend’s annual Halloween Parade.
The students were challenged to create an illuminated, family-friendly, and spooky design. The winning design, created by student Shannon, was selected by the culture and tourism team for its imaginative and eerie elements, perfectly capturing the Halloween spirit.
Supported by lecturers Tara Bowman and local sculptor Dave Taylor, the students will now work together to bring the design to life.
Tara Bowman said: "I'm so proud of these students, especially as they only started the course in September. This was a huge design challenge, and they all rose to it brilliantly. I'm glad I wasn't the one choosing the winner because all the designs were fantastic. I can't wait for everyone to see the final result!"
Cllr Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism and business, added: "The Halloween Parade is always a highlight for residents and visitors. It's wonderful to see students embrace this challenge, and the designs they produced were nothing short of amazing. I'm sure the winning float will be a showstopper at the parade, and I'm excited for the community to see it."
The Halloween Parade will take place on Saturday 26 October, and promises to be a highlight of the year, featuring a thrilling lineup of floats, performers, and community groups.
