A vibrant and heart warming event took place last week on Southend Pier to celebrate individuals with learning disabilities from across the city.
Held on Thursday 12 September, the event was organised by Project 49 and the Southend Learning Disabilities User Voice Group. It attracted around 200 attendees, including Southend'ss Mayor and Mayoress, council executives, individuals with learning disabilities, and their carers.
Highlights included the premiere of a film about the history of Southend Pier, created by the LD digital arts group under Project 49. The film showcased the group's creativity and talent, offering a unique take on the iconic pier.
The Southend Learning Disabilities User Voice Group also led an interactive session to encourage more individuals with learning disabilities to join. The session focused on the group's mission to be a voice for those with learning disabilities and ensure that services in the city are inclusive and co-created.
Councillor Maxine Sadza, cabinet member for social care and healthier communities, said: "We are incredibly proud to support this wonderful event celebrating the achievements and contributions of individuals with learning disabilities in our community.
"Southend Pier provided a perfect backdrop for this joyous occasion, and it was inspiring to see so many people come together to promote inclusivity and understanding.
