A new free exhibition is now open at Beecroft Art Gallery, featuring the innovative work of London-based artist James Tuitt.
Allnighter celebrates the influence of black women in fashion, the vibrant energy of 90s rave culture, and the bold design trends of the 1980s.
The exhibition showcases a collection of Tuitt's new paintings and sculptures. Drawing inspiration from iconic rave posters and flyers of the 1990s, characterised by floating figures, towering futuristic bodies, and eerie landscapes, Tuitt's art uniquely blends graphic design with postmodern aesthetics, reflecting the profound impact of the black women who shaped his journey of self-discovery.
Visitors to Allnighter are invited on a visual journey, tracing the path of a raver from the office to the dancefloor and back again, capturing the morning after. The exhibition is a vibrant display of colours, playful shapes, and bold patterns, reminiscent of the energetic fashion and design trends of the 80s and early 90s.
A key aspect of Tuitt's work is his commitment to archiving fashion magazines featuring black models, rarely seen in editorial campaigns until recent years. Through his magazine cover-like paintings, Tuitt ensures that black models are finally given the spotlight they deserve.
James Tuitt said: "I am thrilled to bring my work to Southend for the first time and connect with a community deeply rooted in cultural and musical history. I hope my art brings joy and inspiration to all who visit."
Councillor Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism, and business, added: "Allnighter is not just an art exhibition, it's a powerful tribute to a bygone era of music and a celebration of the often-overlooked contributions of black women in fashion and culture. We're proud to host this exhibition in Southend, and we encourage everyone to come and experience it."
