Unearthing the past: Anglo-Saxon heritage comes alive at Prittlewell Priory

Get ready for an exciting and educational experience this summer as Anglo-Saxon Weekend returns to Prittlewell Priory!

This weekend you can immerse yourself in history by witnessing combat displays, explore traditional textile craftsmanship, observe cooking demonstrations, visit the falconry tent and more!

The Anglo-Saxon weekend is a family-friendly adventure that celebrates our rich heritage. The event runs on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 August, between 11am and 5pm. Adult tickets are priced at £8, child tickets at £6.50, and children under 3 years old enter for free. Prebooking is recommended.

Cllr Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism, and business, said: "I'm delighted to witness the return of Anglo-Saxon Weekend this year. This event provides both residents and visitors with a captivating journey back in time, allowing them to immerse themselves in our City's vibrant history.

"My heartfelt gratitude to the Southend Museums staff for organising what promises to be yet another successful event, where together, we can celebrate the amazing heritage of our beloved Southend-on-Sea."

The nearby burial site, which was unearthed by archaeologists in 2003, is one of the world's most significant Anglo-Saxon burials. Now known as the 'Prittlewell Prince' a high-status Anglo-Saxon individual believed to be local royalty. The burial site yielded an impressive array of artifacts, which are now on permanent display at Southend Central Museum. Visitors can marvel at these internationally important items and learn about their historical significance.
