The Mayor of Southend-on-Sea writes a Christmas message to residents of the city.
Preparations are well underway this festive season and I would like to extend my personal thanks to those who continue to look after us and keep us safe and well in our city. The police, health staff, fire service, and all those who will be looking after loved ones do a great job. I would also like to thank our own council staff, many of whom will also be working over the Christmas period.
There have been many challenges locally, across the country and elsewhere in the world.
However, as Mayor I have witnessed the warm greetings and kind hospitality from our clubs, charities, schools, and businesses which has been amazing.
It has been a great honour to represent our city. I have been immensely proud to see what takes place in our communities. The Mayoress and I have met many caring and inspirational people and I want to give my sincere thanks to all of you.
We can also reflect on the many wonderful people across our voluntary organisations who give their time and effort to bring cheer to those whose Christmas can be particularly difficult or lonely.
I have been honoured to help raise funds for two important local charities. Havens Hospices and The Music Man Project are worthy causes. The Mayor's charity dip at Chalkwell beach last weekend was my most recent event. It was very cold of course, but we had a great attendance and raised over £700.
Another way to support Havens Hospices is to register for their Christmas tree collection service which returns in January 2024. Although the council's contractor will be doing this as usual, Havens and their volunteers will come and collect your tree from Friday 5 January to Monday 7 January for a donation of £7. This will go towards supporting their excellent work and hospice care. Visit the Havens Hospices website for more information.
I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2024. I look forward to meeting more of you during my time as Mayor.
