Council unveils Corporate Plan to drive community development and growth

Southend-on-Sea City Council has published its strategic blueprint for the future.

A stone finished tower block building with many windows reaches up into a bright blue sky.

The council's Corporate Plan for 2023 to 2027 addresses the changing needs and aspirations of Southend-on-Sea's residents, businesses, and visitors. It sets out the council’s focus for the next four years, what the council aims to deliver for residents, businesses, and millions of visitors, and how the council can transform as an organisation.

Councillor Tony Cox, leader of the council, said: “The Corporate Plan sets out our commitment to a future where every individual can thrive, opportunities flourish, and our city stands as a beacon of prosperity. This plan epitomises our dedication to forging a better, more inclusive future for all.

“We are under no illusions about the scale of the challenges we face. Difficult decisions must be taken around what services to fund with the limited money we have available, balanced against a need for people to pay a bit more for services.

“While these decisions will be difficult, they will enable us to embrace opportunities, ensure long-term financial sustainability for the council, address the inequalities and disparities that exist across the city's neighbourhoods and create the opportunities for our communities and residents.

“I encourage everyone to engage with the plan because your involvement is pivotal in realising our vision. Together, we can build a Southend-on-Sea that thrives, where opportunities abound, and where the wellbeing of every individual is valued.”

Key priorities of the Corporate Plan

A growing city with a strong community: We aim to boost Southend-on-Sea's economy for the benefit of all residents. Leveraging the council's spending power, we will drive economic growth and regeneration while enhancing the skills of our workforce. Our commitment includes bolstering the Southend pound and promoting the city's tourism, culture, and leisure offerings.

A safe city ensuring quality of life: Creating resilient communities is our priority, ensuring safety for all. Our commitment extends to delivering essential housing and required infrastructure within the city.

A clean city fostering environmental resilience: Southend-on-Sea will be a national model for managing flood and coastal erosion risks. We will also promote efficient travel options, optimise recycling, and waste collection to enhance our environmental footprint.

Transforming council for efficient services: Our focus is on organisational transformation, meeting service standards, and providing efficient, resident-centric, digitally empowered council services.

To achieve these ambitious goals, the council will collaborate closely with stakeholders, including residents, businesses, community groups, and governmental organisations.

There are several ways to get involved in the council and local community. These include face-to-face meetings and workshops, telephone, email and via our website and social media.
