A special event has been held to thank all foster carers who work with Southend-on-Sea City Council to provide invaluable support for the children of Southend.
The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Cllr Stephen Habermel, attended the event at the Cliffs Pavilion on Friday 24 November, to personally thank all the council’s foster carers for providing a safe and secure home for the children they care for.
As part of the event the Mayor presented awards to foster carers who shared their experiences at the council’s annual foster carer conference. He also recognised the support the foster carer ambassadors have shown to recruitment activities throughout the year, helping to promote the council’s improved financial rewards package for foster carers that was launched in April 2023.
Local foster carers who work with Southend-on-Sea City Council make sure local children, who cannot stay with their birth families for whatever reason, stay close to their hometown and familiar surroundings and help to reduce the cost of seeking help from private fostering agencies.
Foster carer ambassador, Jo, said: “Receiving an award from the Mayor was a lovely surprise. I accepted the award on behalf of all my fellow foster carers and encourage anyone to take the first step and pick up the phone or send us an email – don’t put it off or doubt yourself! I’ve been fostering with the council for six years and I have never looked back. Fostering is an absolute privilege.”
Cllr Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children’s services, education and learning, said: “I was delighted to be a part of the celebration event with our amazing foster carers. It was truly humbling to hear the difference they make to the lives of the children they care for. I’m passionate about making sure all children of Southend have the childhood they deserve and urge anyone who is interested to please get in touch with us. This time next year you could help give a child the Christmas they deserve.”
