A scheme launched to support young carers in Southend-on-Sea is gaining momentum as more people become aware of it.
CALM or ‘caring and loving me-time’ is a new service that works with schools and other professionals to highlight young carers aged 8 to 14, and make sure they get the support they need.
It runs alongside existing young carer sessions at Shoeburyness Youth Centre called COOL for 5 to 11-year-olds and CHIL for 12 to 18-year-olds. The group gives the youngsters the opportunity to relax and socialise with others who understand their home situation, with membership still growing.
Cllr Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children's social services, education and learning, said: “Young people need the opportunity to be children, even if it's only for a small period of time once a week. The young people who have attended the session so far, have said it has improved their self-confidence, as they made new friends.
“CALM is the latest addition to the support groups offered to young carers in the City and I would encourage those young people, with any element of caring responsibility, to get involved and enjoy some carefree me-time.”
Further targeted youth support groups are run by Southend-on-Sea City Council for people aged 5 to 18-years-old, or 25-years-old for SEND.
