Cllr Tony Cox discusses the importance of perspective and how it should frame the decisions we make as a City.

We had the pleasure this week of welcoming Mr Ivan Fedorov, Mayor of Melitopol City Council and Ms Olha Pikula, Deputy of Mariupol City Council to our City.

Hearing first-hand their passion and pain as they spoke of the atrocities they and their people have faced, their continued pride in their hometowns and country, and their faith that they will prevail and Ukraine will continue to stand strong, was both inspiring and humbling.

There is nothing like hearing about people facing war with such bravery and conviction, to give you some perspective.

Yes, we have serious financial challenges facing us as a council and as a City and we have other issues we must tackle. But we're safe from fear and tyranny. And for those in an individual situation, where they do not feel safe, there are dedicated people, within the council and the wider community, who are working hard to get them the protection they need. Whether it is from domestic abuse, County Lines, homelessness or poverty, for example.

We're lucky to live in a free nation. And we're lucky to have the supportive, caring community that we do. As I said in my speech during the special council meeting on Tuesday; “In moments of great upheaval and uncertainty, knowing who stands with you can make a difference.” We have a lot to be thankful for.

We are also lucky in the UK to have access to healthcare, including vaccinations. As we head into autumn, it's worth accepting any vaccinations and health checks you may be offered by the NHS. The best way to protect yourself, and your loved ones from Covid, flu and other nasty infections, is to get jabbed. While you might be healthy enough to cope with infections, the germs can pass easily between people, and you could be unknowingly passing it on to someone who is clinically vulnerable. Please do the right thing and get protected.

I wish all the children who sat the 11+ last weekend the best for their results. The application process for secondary school is now open until 31 October. Parents can select up to five schools for their year 6 child to attend in the next academic year. While it can seem a daunting decision, as a parent, I can say that every child is different, and you need to put aside preconceptions, and pick a school based on what is right for them.

Finally, a quick shout out for the return of the fireworks this weekend. This year's free display is brought to you by Southend Seaside Partnership and Southend BID and will run for a total of eight weeks. You can find out more on our events page.

If you go along, please post photos and help get everyone excited for the autumnal nights and to brighten everyone's social media feed.

Enjoy!

Leader of the Council
