Amazing activities are planned to celebrate Anglo-Saxon Weekend and the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the Prittlewell Prince.
Experienced re-enactors, supported by staff from Southend Museums, will spend the weekend of Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August recreating Anglo-Saxon life with a living history camp at Prittlewell Priory.
Between 11am and 4pm, children aged three to 14, can do arts, crafts and take part in mini archaeological excavations.
It's all part of the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the Prince, which was hailed as Britain's Tutankhamun. There is the opportunity to attend some informal drop-in sessions covering various themes such as ‘who was the Prittlewell Prince?’ and ‘Was the Prittlewell Prince a Pagan or a Christian?’
There is also a market happening in the refectory of Prittlewell Priory, with maker's and artisan's from across Essex, showing their work over the weekend.
Derek Jarvis, cabinet member for arts, culture heritage and leisure said: “I am delighted to see the return of Anglo-Saxon weekend this year. Anglo-Saxon weekend is a great event for all the family.
“Although the event is aimed at children aged three to 10, I am pleased to see the addition of the Prittlewell Prince talks for visitors aged over 14, and the market for the adults of the children who come to the event. It should be a great day for the whole family.”
