As part of our commitment to combatting climate change, Southend-on-Sea City Council is supporting ‘Better Transport Week’ encouraging more people to travel greener.

As an official partner of Better Transport Week, the council will be joining over 80 organisations to promote the wide range of benefits of sustainable travel.
Better Transport Week runs from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 June and will feature a different transport theme each day:

  • Monday 12 June - Rail Day. Celebrating rail as one of the greenest ways to travel, vital to the economy and key to reducing carbon emissions and traffic on our roads.
  • Tuesday 13 June – Bus and Coach Day. Celebrating our most used form of public transport with the public encouraged to thank their driver and share why buses and coaches are important to them.
  • Wednesday 14 June - Local Transport Day. Celebrating the transport we use day in day out.
  • Thursday 15 June – Health Day. Highlighting the health impacts of transport on National Clean Air Day.
  • Friday 16 June - Business Day. Focussing on how businesses can reduce their transport emissions and encourage their employees to travel to work more sustainably.
  • Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June. Rounding off the week with two days in celebration of public transport, walking and cycling.

Cllr Meg Davidson, cabinet member for environment, said: “Better Transport Week is such a great initiative to get people thinking about greener travel. With the warmer weather reaching us it makes people want to go out and enjoy the sunshine, what better way than going for a bike ride or a walk to get where you need to go.

“The council are so proud to be one of more than 80 organisations supporting Better Transport Week, including the Department for Transport, local authorities, transport industry, businesses and passenger groups and we hope that our residents will support their City by choosing to travel greener!”

Rail passengers also have the chance to win £100 in vouchers by sharing what they love about their railway station, by sending a comment, photo, artwork or even a poem about what makes their station great. For more information visit: Rail Day - Campaign for Better Transport

Silviya Barrett, director of policy and research at Campaign for Better Transport, and Southend resident, said: “As we mark the charity’s 50th anniversary, we are launching the first ever Better Transport Week to shine a light on all the wonderful local transport options we have. Buses, trains, walking and cycling help us stay healthy, reduce pollution and congestion on our roads, and connect us to vital public services and amenities in our great city. I am delighted to be working with Southend-on-Sea City Council to ensure everyone has access to good sustainable transport options.”
