More than 2,000 children have received a Christmas present thanks to the generosity of residents who donated gifts to Southend-on-Sea City Council’s annual Toy Drive.

A grand total of 3,127 toys were generously donated this year, making up a total of 2,031 wrapped toys, as some parcels have more than one gift, using 600 metres of wrapping paper and 17 rolls of sticky tape.

Alongside individual residents donating presents, including four-year-old Noah Cole, there were contributions from pupils at Chalkwell Hall School, the Kings Road United Reform Church, Southend Youth Council, First Bus Essex, South Essex College, Olympus, Wayland Games and Southend Airport.

A huge thanks also goes to Argosy Toys, Toy ‘n’ Tuck, The Forum and Sale Appliance for their support collecting and delivering toys.

Cllr Laurie Burton, cabinet member for children and learning, said: “I am astounded by the generosity of our residents and businesses, particularly given this year’s cost of living crisis, and the kindness of council staff for organising this Toy Drive, the donations, collections, wrapping and deliveries, on top of their day jobs.

“Plus, our amazing local businesses, including Argosy Toys and Toys ‘n’ Tuck who do such a fantastic job of promoting and supporting the Toy Drive.

“It really is incredible to think that so many children who might have gone without a Christmas present this year, were treated to a gift and had something to open on Christmas Day. This outpouring of giving reflects the true meaning of Christmas; love, community and generosity.”

Joe Chesterton, executive director of finance and resources, also thanked staff. He said “I am so proud of everyone involved in our annual toy drive, which is now in its ninth year. In that time, a total of 31,339 donations have been made and 12,540 presents distributed to children across our City.”
