A new business directory has been developed exclusively for all Southend based businesses.
The It’s Local Southend Business Directory is aimed at people who live, work and travel to Southend as well as the Southend business community and is free to use for both customers and businesses.
Since going live in March, over 1,250 businesses have signed up to be listed including:
- 285 wholesale and retailers
- 179 legal, accounting, and other professional services
- 146 accommodation and food/beverage providers
- and many more other businesses such as creatives, human health, finance, real estate, education, manufacturing, construction, and membership services
It’s Local Southend also lists job vacancies, council tender opportunities and commercial properties in Southend. As part of the offer, the directory boasts an inclusive business guide to business support in the area.

Cllr Ian Gilbert, leader of the council and cabinet member for economic recovery and regeneration, said: “This initiative is the result of Southend-on-Sea City Council listening to local businesses, including the Southend Business Partnership who have requested a local business directory.
“The benefits of buying local are considerable. By directing more council spending towards Southend businesses, it means more money flowing within the local economy which could create more jobs.
“The directory will also replace the local supplier list that the council uses to obtain goods and services and council officers are being urged to use the new directory where appropriate."
Cllr Carole Mulroney, cabinet member for environment, culture, tourism & planning, added: “Sourcing products and services from local businesses reduces transportation, packaging, and pollution. The council is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has set a target to reach net zero by 2030 and smarter procurement from local businesses is just one of many actions needed to achieve our goal."
