Storm Eunice update

Storm Eunice has caused disruption to Southend-on-Sea as top wind speeds of 90mph were recorded by the pier and foreshore team.

Tree blown over in storm Eunice, blocking the road.

The high winds predicted by the Met Office started just after midday, causing the High Street to be closed from Clifftown to London Road due to safety concerns. Businesses were notified and advised to close, as building damage and unsecure scaffolding were reported.

The council’s parks team have dealt with more than 80 fallen trees across the borough, but as yet no roads are officially closed as a result. Drivers are advised to be careful when travelling around.

Waste collections have taken place as expected, with crews braving the winds to collect people’s secured rubbish.

Building control officers are out looking at various structures that have been reported as dangerous but are prioritising due to the number of cases. If damage has already occurred, teams are working together to make the area safe and remove debris from the public highway.

Cllr Ian Gilbert, leader of the council, said: “Our resilience team have been monitoring the weather and meeting with colleagues in the council and from across the county to coordinate efforts and make sure there is a prompt and efficient response to any issues.

“It is disappointing that some people have chosen to ignore the warnings, with wind surfers reportedly in the water off the Southend coastline this morning. But I would also like to say thank you to everyone who has followed the national advice to stay home and stay safe.

“I would also like to thank Veolia staff for carrying out their collections and providing additional eyes and ears reporting fallen trees for example. I would also like to thank council staff and emergency services for doing all they can to keep disruption to a minimum, and responding to extremely challenging circumstances.
