Community Safety Unit
In addition to Southend Business Improvement District (BID) Street Rangers, a team of Community Safety Officers patrol the city centre, whose role includes tackling anti-social behaviour.
Community Safety Officers are:
- police accredited
- trained in first aid
- trained in conflict management
- part of the wider Community Safety Partnership
CCTV
The Council employs a total 267 cameras, many of which cover the city centre. They are operated from a control room that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Images are:
- recorded digitally
- held for no more than 31 days (unless required as evidence)
This is to ensure we abide by the Data Protection Act.
Data is only released for authorised use. An example could be at court by the Crown Prosecution Service via the police.
Under the terms of CCTV Data Protection Legislation, you can access CCTV footage which has recognisable images of yourself.
TownLink Radio
The TownLink Radio system is used by businesses and services in the city centre. It helps to develop a safer environment.
It allows users to communicate quickly and effectively, helping to detect and prevent crime.
Currently it has over 100 users including:
- Essex Police
- CCTV
- Community Safety Team
- BID Street Rangers
